Prevent corns

Our foot is an engineering miracle and is one of the most abused parts of our body. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, the average American walks 115,000 miles in a lifetime, a distance that would take you all the way around the earth four times. On an average day the feet are subject to a force that is many hundred tons. It is no wonder that an estimated 87% of American adults suffer from various foot ailments. Some of the common ones are corns and calluses. These are patches of skin under the feet that toughen to protect the parts of the soles that are most used to help form a barrier to the constant friction that those spots face.

There are two types of corns, the hard ones and the soft. Hard corns form on the top of the toes and sometimes on the outer sides where there is most friction between the foot and the shoe. Soft corns form between toes and are caused by friction between toes. There are many home treatments that you can follow to help prevent corns. Wear proper fitting shoes, keep your feet moisturized, trim your nails regularly and use toe separators. Soaking your feet and using a pumice stone to smoothen the skin will also help prevent corns.

Get help for corns

If your corns get infected you should see a podiatrist. Dr. Mike Cornelison is a podiatrist in Cupertino and he will be able to help you get rid of your corns. Dr. Mike’s Online Foot Care Relief Store has some great foot products to help prevent corns. Their Soft Tissue Replacement Pads (Adhesive Backed) are designed to act as “tissue replacements” for those areas on the bottom of the foot that need more padding and protection. Made of a special foam cushioning material, these 1/4” thick pads can be easily trimmed with a scissors to fit any painful area on the foot. Due to the compressive nature of the material, these pads fit in even dressy shoes. They are adhesive backed to make for easy application, and are durable.

Dr. Jills Felt Lesion Combo Pack contains 4 Large Oval Shaped Bunion Pads, 4 Circular Callus Pads and 4 Small Oval Shaped Corn Pads. Hapad Dancer Pads (Used to Relieve Pain under Big Toe Joint & Sesamoids) are medical grade felt and foam pre-cut pads designed to relieve pressure on the sesamoid bones (under big toe joint).
